If you're having trouble connecting your Square reader, follow these steps to troubleshoot and get back to processing payments smoothly:
Open the Square app and go to the menu:
👉 Tap on More → Settings → Hardware.
Under the Connected Devices section, forget all connected Square readers. This will remove any previously paired devices from the Square app.
Go to your phone’s Bluetooth settings.
Remove all Square devices from the list of paired devices to ensure a fresh connection attempt.
Close the Square app completely by force stopping it from your phone’s settings. This helps reset the app and clear any temporary issues.
To reboot the Square reader, press and hold the power button on the reader for around 10-20 seconds.
The reader will start flashing red (not orange). This indicates it's rebooting.
After rebooting the reader, wait around 10-20 seconds for it to fully restart.
Open the Square app again and pair the Square device as usual:
👉 Tap More → Settings → Hardware → Square Readers → Connect a Reader.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the connection.
If you're still unable to connect the Square reader after following the previous steps, try using Tap to Pay on your phone.
This could indicate a potential problem with either your Square reader or phone.
To enable Tap to Pay:
👉 Go to More → Settings → Hardware → General.
Turn on "Tap to Pay" and enable NFC in your phone settings.
When checking out, tap Tap to Pay on the checkout page and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the payment.
