If you're having trouble connecting your Square reader, follow these steps to troubleshoot and get back to processing payments smoothly:
Open the Square app and go to the menu:
👉 Tap on More → Settings → Hardware.
Under the Connected Devices section, forget all connected Square readers. This will remove any previously paired devices from the Square app.
Go to your phone’s Bluetooth settings.
Remove all Square devices from the list of paired devices to ensure a fresh connection attempt.
Close the Square app completely by force stopping it from your phone’s settings. This helps reset the app and clear any temporary issues.
Use your finger or a small object like a hair pin, pen cap, or paper clip to firmly press and hold the button on your Square Reader for 20 seconds.
After 20 seconds, release the button. Do not let go of the power button until after the red lights have stopped flashing.
Press the button again to turn your Square Reader on and observe any lights on Square Reader.
If Square Reader lights turn on, you’re all set.
The steps to perform a factory reset take about 5 minutes to complete and should only be performed after all other troubleshooting steps have been attempted.
Forget the reader from your device again.
Forget the reader from your point of sale app by tapping ≡ More > Settings > Hardware > Square Readers > Forget This Reader.
Hold the reader button down for 20 seconds. Do not release the button until the red lights stop flashing.
To start the reader, push and hold the button until green LED lights come on, then release the button.
Once again, hold the reader button down for 20 seconds. Do not release the button until the red lights stop flashing. It's important to do this within 30 seconds of restarting the reader.
Start the reader a second time; push and hold the button until green LED lights come on, then release the button.
After the second reboot, the reader will have performed a factory reset. The reader’s LEDs will blink green once again (without pressing the reader button) to indicate that the reset was successful.
Once the factory reset is complete, try to pair your reader.
Open the Square app again and pair the Square device as usual:
👉 Tap More → Settings → Hardware → Square Readers → Connect a Reader.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the connection.
If you're still unable to connect the Square reader after following the previous steps, try using Tap to Pay on your phone.
To enable Tap to Pay:
👉 Go to More → Settings → Hardware → General.
Turn on "Tap to Pay" and enable NFC in your phone settings.
When checking out, tap Tap to Pay on the checkout page and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the payment.
‼️Use this payment option only in rare cases when no other options are available. Manually entered card payments have higher processing fees, higher fraud risks, and some customers may be uncomfortable sharing their credit card details for manual entry. ‼️
While completing a transaction, tap Charge to start processing the payment.
Tap Manual Card Entry to enter the customer’s card number, expiration date, security code, and billing postal code.
Tap Charge to finish processing the payment.
